sail seminar series

This year, Sail America’s Cruising Seminar Series, sponsored by Cruising Outpost and Harken, will again have four seminar tents continuously running cruising seminars — sail and power alike — for a show total of almost 100 seminars.

One of the best ways to learn about cruising and all the opportunities available is to visit a boat show! Whether you are just getting started, planning your dream cruise, preparing for your favorite passage, or looking to get the most out of your adventure, there is a seminar for you.

Enjoy seminars on cruising destinations, weather, tides, cruising on a budget, voyage planning, electronics, cruising for couples, catamaran cruising, storm strategies and more. With many unique topics and a plethora of experienced presenters, you may want to spend the entire weekend!

Join the Sail America’s Cruising Seminar Series where you will get training on a little bit of everything from Do it Yourself Boat Projects, Drones and Boating, Celestial Navigation, and Offshore Energy Management to Understanding the 500 mb Chart and Cruising the Bahamas! Sail America will be offering a blend of dozens of one-hour free seminars and a handful of for-fee, drill-down workshops. Our Cruising Seminar Series has something for everyone!

This year, the seminar series will feature both free and for-fee seminars presented by experts in their fields — Lee Chesneau, Pam Wall and Bill Cullen, to name a few.

Lee Chesneau, “The Weather Guy,” will be presenting and holding workshops on topics such as Introduction to the 500 Mb Chart, Wind and Wave Concepts and Charts, At Sea-level Surface Pressure, and Understanding Weather and Cruise Decision Making. Chesneau is a senior marine meteorologist, lecturer and author. He had a distinguished career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Weather Service and Satellite Service. He also served as a U.S. Navy officer and as a route analyst for a commercial weather and ship-routing company. Today, Lee is an accomplished U.S. Coast Guard certified instructor for basic and advanced meteorology at a number of continuing-training institutions for professional mariners. He offers the same curriculum to educate and train recreational boaters on becoming self-reliant in their own marine weather knowledge for application in marine weather forecasting and strategic vessel routing.

Pam Wall, an outfitting and cruising consultant, will be presenting on Cool New Products, Outfitting for Blue Water Cruising, and Cruising the Abacos in the Bahamas. Pam is best known for outfitting world cruisers, consulting on prospective routes for sailing, her sailing instruction, and as a seminar speaker who encourages and educates on the cruising lifestyle. Along with her husband, Andy, and two young children, Samantha and Jamie, Pam has sailed around the world on their custom-made Freya 39 KANDARIK. Pam's boat — built at home — first took her family around the world and then three times back and forth across the Atlantic to Europe. Pam worked for West Marine for over 20 years as their Outfitting Manager and Cruising Consultant.

Bill Cullen, author of the Book of Sail, will be presenting on The Top 25 Things to Have on Board, Panama Canal Transit, Cooking Aboard and Abroad, and Building Your Cruising Confidence. Bill has been a professional captain and delivery skipper for over 40 years, with 100,000 miles of offshore racing, cruising and delivery experience. He was a yacht broker for a decade and has owned and restored over a dozen sailboats. Bill has cruised the Bahamas, eastern and western Caribbean, the South Pacific and the French canals. You may have read his “How To" and “Gadget” articles in various sailing magazines including Sail Magazine and Southwinds.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to fine tune your cruising knowledge and network with some of the best in their fields!
